Beautiful! And I don't see anything odd about a flying wolf. For years I used a flying fox as part of my logo-and not the sort that hangs from trees and eats fruit! My little red fox had hawk's wings-but I think I like the kind you've done even better. Great subtle use of jewel tones. And the wolf is beautifully realized, as always. I can't wait to see the finished piece!
Thanks people! I've finished the painting now, but I can't show it until the publisher (Workman) releases it. Your comments sure gave me confidence about those wings, though!
ESTIMADOS MAESTROS, ESPERO PUEDAN LEER ESTO DE LA MEJOR MANERA. LES ESCRIBO DESDE COLOMBIA.
SIMPLEMENTE LES AGRADEZCO POR HABERME PERMITIDO VER SU OBRA QUE HA SIGNIFICADO MUCHO EN I VIDA, TANTO LA DE BORIS (AL PRIMERO QUE CONOCÍ) COMO A JULIE.
DE VERDAD GRACIAS, ESPERO ALGÚN DÍA TENER SU GRATA VISITA EN MI BLOG UN POCO AJENO EN LÍNEA A SU ARTE, PUES ES DE HUMOR GRÁFICO Y CARICATURA E ILUSTRACIÓN, LLEVO 10 AÑOS DE ILUSTRADOR PROFESIONAL EN MI PAÍS Y SERÍA UN INMENSO HONOR Y ESTÍMULO RECIBIR DE USTEDES ESA GRAN AMABILIDAD.
DIOS LOS BENDIGA Y LOS CONSERVE AL IGUAL QUE SU ARTE.
Before I critique I want to say I really enjoy you guy's work and I know you both work really hard and are very talented and its almost like, who am I to have an opinion?
But, I do. I love how you can get a realistic, natural look to your subjects, but at the same time I think that makes the work even harder to do because it can look 'contrived' or whatever the word is.
Like this dog, all I can ever think when viewing this is: some body pasted a picture of a dog on a canvas and then painted around it.
I'll always view the dog as just a dog and not something magical or part of the piece.
ALOT of you guy's work is getting like this. I have collected your calanders in the past and have several of your art books.
I am bored with Boris's babes ruining a completely fine painting because he feels obligated to stick one in there. Like that beautiful grasshopper space ship painting with the robot guy in the thinker pose on it. That ROCKED. But the booty babe ruined it. She even looks like she was stuck on as an after thought and has no real place in that 'universe'.
It is the same when you use your friends as models. When you paint from photographs or life and then try to paint fantasy around it the two don't mesh, in my opinion, and the whole painting isn't done to the same 'realism'.
I guess that is my whole point I am trying to make. In a lot of your paintings, especially the calenders, there doesn't seem to be a continuity or uniformity to the entire painting.
And that is exactly what is at work in this wolf painting.
The dog doesn't even have any type of expression or anything to make it even look like it is aware that it is in this fantasy world and is flying. It looks like a dog that you photographed while it quietly relaxed in the yard or something.
Sorry if I hurt anyone, that wasn't my intention. I know you all have the ability to paint awesome stuff. I have much the same problems when I try to use photographs for reference so this is just as much a gripe about my stuff as yours.
But, I don't pay money to buy books and stuff of my artwork.

So far it's looking lovely. I'm fascinated by the butterfly like shine and seeming brittleness of the feathers.
Fantastic! This is really beautiful, Julie. I may be biased by my love of dogs but even at this stage it is gorgeous!
wonderful!!!
the women daning like a dream and the wolf flying over the clouds
is possible that the wolf would be a wolfwoman remenber her human figure?
