Wolf Business Meeting

I still have a few more touches left to do on this painting, but it's close enough to being finished to show it here.  I just love wolves.  Their energy is so wild!  We took the reference photos that I used to paint this at the Lakota Wolf Preserve in Columbia, NJ.  I couldn't believe how cool it was when this group of wolves started doing this biting thing with each other.  Apparently, they're reinforcing their hierarchy--making it clear to all involved exactly who's on top and who gets their nose bitten.  I guess anybody in the business world can identify with it!

I just can't get over how beautifully you've rendered fur, light and their expressions in this painting. Simply amazing! Just out of curiosity, how big is the piece, and did you use a lot of size 0 brushes to create it?

A bit of trivia; the behavior is known as "muzzle pinning" . The pack mouths one anothers muzzles according to rank. It generally never turns into a hostile situation unless one of the "middle managers" tries to move up a notch or two!

This is gorgeous. I love the details. When I was a kid I used to fantasize about being raised by wolves and looking back...I'm not entirely sure I wasn't. :)
Seriously though, this is superb.

Listening to "Call of the Wild" on my MP3 player while i paint recently and thinking an illustrated julie edition would be nice. eh eh?

Wow! I just ordered "Julie's Wolf Pack", THREE novels in one pack! I'd never heard of these before--thanks so much, Steven, for telling me about it!
Gregory, sounds like we might share some common ancestry!
David, Boris and I just want you to be the best David Patel the world's ever seen!
And Jen, no size 0, but a few roughed-up size 1 round brushes, lots of medium-sized flats. Thanks for the wolf trivia!

What an amazing painting Julie, for a while ive noticed your wolfs in other paintings have really stood out, but this painting honestly I dont think ive ever seen a wolf painting this good.
The fur is so amazing, the eyes so real, and its almost as if you blured the wolf on the right just a little to show the in and out phocus of the camera lense or human eye, wow what a touch.
There is great place to sketch wolfs where I live its in Ipswich MA, www.wolfhollowipswich.org
Ive gone there a few times and man they have such grace in person, when they run they almost gallop like a horse, its very stunning to see. Anyways what really cool amazing wolf painting, look forward to seeing more.

Nice business meeting. Humans are not different from wolves. Humans also take meetings and plan there together that how can we eat poor people? I am sorry its the sour truth. If you want to see how these type of meeting organised. Goto the Forex market. Where in every second currency exchange rates are going down and up for their own rules.
